Probiotics: How to Compare Strains, CFUs, Expiration Dates, and Storage

Probiotics are live microorganisms that may provide health benefits when consumed in adequate amounts. They are found in some fermented foods and in dietary supplements, but products that share the word “probiotic” can be very different. The most useful comparison starts with the exact organism, the evidence for that organism, and the way the product is labeled—not the biggest number on the front of the bottle.

What makes one probiotic different from another?

Probiotic microorganisms are identified by genus, species, and strain. For example, the “GG” in Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG identifies a particular strain. Two products may contain the same genus and species but different strains, and those strains may not have the same research record. Evidence for one strain or combination should not automatically be applied to every product labeled probiotic.[1] [3]

That distinction matters because a product can be accurately labeled and still not be the right match for the question you are asking. A label that names only a broad category, such as “probiotic blend,” gives you less information to compare with human research.

How to read a probiotic label

Also check whether the label provides a manufacturer name and contact information. Clear labeling does not prove that a product will help you, but it makes the product easier to evaluate and discuss with a healthcare professional.

What CFUs tell you—and what they do not

CFU means colony-forming unit. It is a way of estimating viable microorganisms that can form colonies under specified conditions. CFU counts can decline over time, so look for whether the number is guaranteed at the time of manufacture or through the expiration date. A guarantee through the expiration date gives a more useful picture of what the label claims should remain at the end of shelf life.[1]

A higher CFU count is not automatically a stronger or better product. The possible effect depends on the organism or strain, the amount studied, the population, and the way the product was used. A product with 50 billion CFUs is not necessarily a better choice than one with 5 billion CFUs if the lower-count product contains the strain and amount studied for the specific purpose.

Foods versus probiotic supplements

Yogurt, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, miso, and other fermented foods can contain live microorganisms. However, not every fermented food contains microorganisms that meet the definition of a probiotic with a demonstrated health benefit. Processing, heating, storage, and the particular culture used can change what is present in the finished food.[1] [3]

Supplements may make it easier to identify a particular strain and stated amount, but they are not automatically more effective than food. In the United States, dietary supplements are regulated differently from drugs and do not receive FDA approval for safety or effectiveness before they are sold. This makes careful label reading and realistic expectations especially important.[2]

Storage, handling, and expiration

Follow the product’s storage instructions rather than assuming every probiotic belongs in the refrigerator. Some products are designed to remain stable at room temperature, while others require refrigeration. Keep the container closed as directed and pay attention to heat or moisture during transport and storage. If a product has been stored outside the stated conditions, the number of viable organisms may not match what a consumer expects.

Check the expiration or use-by date before buying or taking the product. When the label lists CFUs only at manufacture, that number may not reflect the amount remaining later in the product’s shelf life. A date and a CFU guarantee through that date provide more useful information than a large number without timing context.[1]

How to think about evidence and marketing claims

Probiotic research is not one single body of evidence. Studies may involve different strains, doses, durations, age groups, and outcomes. Some research has found possible benefits for specific situations, while other studies have found no benefit or results that vary by strain. A broad claim such as “supports gut health” does not tell you which outcome was studied or whether the study product matches the one in front of you.

Be cautious with claims that a probiotic will treat a disease, replace medical care, or work for everyone. A more useful question is: What exact strain and outcome were studied, in which population, and does the label provide enough information to compare the product with that evidence?

Common pitfalls to avoid

  • Choosing solely by the highest CFU number.
  • Assuming that all strains of the same species have the same effects.
  • Confusing fermented foods with products proven to provide a specific probiotic benefit.
  • Ignoring the difference between CFUs at manufacture and CFUs through expiration.
  • Overlooking storage instructions, heat exposure, or an expired product.
  • Using a probiotic to delay evaluation of persistent, worsening, or concerning symptoms.

Practical checklist before you buy or use one

  • Does the label list the full genus, species, and strain for each microorganism?
  • Are the CFUs stated per serving, and are they guaranteed through the expiration date?
  • Is the expiration or use-by date clear and still current?
  • Can you follow the storage instructions consistently?
  • Is there evidence for the same strain, amount, and purpose you are considering?
  • Does the ingredient list fit your allergies, intolerances, diet, and other supplements?
  • Would a pharmacist, clinician, or registered dietitian help you decide whether this product is appropriate?

Safety and when to ask for help

Healthy people may experience gas or other mild digestive changes when using probiotics. However, probiotics may not be safe for everyone. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements notes that infections or life-threatening illness have been reported in certain high-risk groups, including some preterm infants and people who are seriously ill or have severely weakened immune systems.[1]

Ask a healthcare professional before using a probiotic if you are pregnant, choosing one for an infant or child, seriously ill, immunocompromised, or taking it for persistent symptoms. Seek medical care rather than relying on a supplement if symptoms are severe, worsening, or unexplained.

Bottom line

Compare probiotics by the exact strain, CFU timing, storage requirements, expiration date, and evidence for the purpose you have in mind. The largest CFU number is not a reliable shortcut. Clear labeling can help you make a more informed choice, but it does not guarantee a health outcome or make professional guidance unnecessary.
